This month marked the anniversary of September 11, which was a horrendous tragedy that killed almost 3000 people and changed the world. It received a lot of news coverage and recognition. Last month marked the 70th year since the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan; I don’t know about you, but I didn’t even hear about it until after the anniversary had passed. Apparently they still aren’t sure exactly how many people they killed, but it’s estimated to be killed at least 129,000 people. The bombings undoubtedly changed the world. And I have trouble understanding why it happened. Why did the US bomb Japan? Was it really necessary? How can it be justified?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never thought much about water pollution – I’ve lived my whole life with the privilege of knowing that I can turn on a tap and that clean water will come out. But I was recently watching a documentary on the great Pacific Garbage Patch and was horrified to discover that this giant aquatic dump is floating around the Pacific, occupying an area that is thought to be twice the size of the United States! They say this has been caused by “improper waste disposal” and that up to 80% of the pollution has come from land (just by people littering or not getting rid of their garbage the way they’re supposed to). I suddenly feel like I might be part of the problem and not even know it! Am I participating in “improper waste disposal”? How to prevent water pollution?

I’ve got a bit of a delicate situation, but feel like I really need some advice. My partner and I have been together for 11 years now and we have 2 small children. Since the birth of our youngest child, I haven’t been able to get back to work and my partner is feeling the financial strain of trying to support our family. He has also had to deal with stresses at work and the death of a family member. My partner is a good person and an excellent parent, but he has been under a lot of strain and it has started to manifest itself in what I believe is verbal abuse. The smallest things can set him off, yelling at me and criticising me. Let me be clear – I love my partner and I want to support him through this difficult time. I want to rebuild and repair our relationship. But I also need to be better equipped to deal with the verbal abuse. So how to deal with verbal abuse? I’d like to be able to diffuse the situation before it gets out of hand.
