One main reason is to eliminate or reduce echo. When on stage, the singer generally stands behind the speakers. In an auditorium built for concerts, sound will radiate through the building. This is a bonus for the audience but when the music echoes back to the stage, the singer can become confused, because by the time the music bounces back to the stage, the sound coming back can be a second or two off from what the singer is currently singing.
Another reason is to block the sound from the band. These instruments are very loud, especially the instruments which use electric amplifiers. The background noise can make it very hard for the singer to hear themselves sing.
Previously (and currently in some venues where cover bands do gigs: bars, private parties, etc.), stage monitors were used to help the singer hear only what he or she is currently singing. This works fine for him as the only background noises are the audience and his own instruments/machines. Stage machines do not work very well in today's amped up concert venues. My cat is done with his meal by attempting to bury his food on the laminate floor (he’s never very successful, however!). We often joke that he’s trying to hide it from the dog. But in reality, it’s probably natural instinct, to save the leftovers for later by hiding it from other predators. It sure is cute, seeing him try to cover his food dish. It seems your cat is not alone in this odd behavior!

I remember when I was a kid, I had a dog who used to bury her Milkbones in the gravel of the driveway, which was much easier than digging a hole in the hard ground. We’d see her out there pushing the gravel with her nose to save her treat for later!

Most brides today wear two garters during their wedding. One for keeps and one for kicks. They wear both garters on their right leg. He then throws the garter to all the single male guests. Whoever gets the garter first among the single male guests is believed to be the next groom in the block.
