I often observe how quickly people follow some of our leaders. And I also dream of becoming such a leader some day. So I wonder if there is any particular advice on how to influence people. Any idea?

Be good at whatever you do and people will listen and look up to you. Being successful is a great way to enhance your influence over other people. Whether you are a sportsman, doctor, or businessman – being good at what you do almost forces people to appreciate you more.

Being successful also means having more money, and, like it or not, money is the ultimate influence peddler. It does not mean that you have to bribe people just to get their attention, but having money certainly doesn’t hurt your convincing power. And if the battle for influence gets really tough, people will are more likely going to side with the ones who have the money than those who don’t.

To influence people, you have to remember that action speaks louder than words. Show them how to do things the right way and they are more likely to follow your lead. People tend to gravitate towards those who act decisively in every situation. Be a man of action, instead of words, and you will influence a lot of people.

Many people don’t realize it, but your body language is actually a big factor on how to influence people. Friends, family members, and even strangers we meet on the street consciously or sub-consciously create an image of who we are based on our body language. A slumping shoulder may signify inferiority complex while an erect posture projects confidence.

The way people treat you and their willingness to take your suggestions seriously are affected by the image that you project. You will have better chance to influence their thoughts and actions by projecting a strong and confident image.

Stand firm on your principles and you will influence the way people think and act. You will often notice this kind of effect during times of turmoil, when the masses follow whoever they think is willing to lay his life on the line just to defend his beliefs.

You don’t have to go to the extreme of doing something crazy just to show how committed you are to your beliefs before you can influence other people’s way of thinking and their lives. Your words and everyday acts are enough to show your adherence to your principles.
