I’m planning to write a blog about what it is like to be living as an expat in a third world country, whilst also dealing with a physical disability. I want the blog to be fun, informative, helpful, and, above all, I want people to actually read it! My hope is that the blog will grow popular enough that I can sell advertising space around it and, in so doing, get an additional source of income. Having said that, I’ve never written a blog before and I know there are millions currently online. So the question is: how to make your blog popular? Any suggestions from regular blog readers would be really helpful!

I’m not an expert on this, but I do read a lot of blogs. First of all, I think it’s great you have a purpose - you’re not just planning to ramble on about your day to day thoughts. Always make the purpose of your blog abundantly clear – in the introduction and in the actual articles. I’d also recommend formulating some kind of schedule (whether you plan to write once a day, once a week or once a month) and choosing “themes”. For example, you could start by writing a series of articles on what it is like actually organizing yourself and moving to a new country. You could then progress to first impressions of the country, how disability-friendly the infrastructure is, how receptive the local people are, what challenges you have encountered, where you have found help, etc. Try and keep it methodical and logical in order. Finally, be yourself – don’t try and be super funny if you’re not, don’t try and sound Oxford-educated if you’re not. I’d recommend getting a close friend or family member to proof read your articles before you send post them and ask for feedback on whether or not they can picture you saying what you’ve written.

Use correct spelling and grammar! And don’t write the entire thing in uppercase or lowercase – structure your sentences! Nothing turns me off a blog faster than opening it up to see, “WELL IT’S ANOTHER DAY HERE IN LUNDON & I’M ROFLMAO BCOS…”

Heaps of websites offer stock standard blog designs, but just as many will let you customize – if you ask me, customization is always better, stand out from the crowd, express yourself, etc. If you want readers to find you, definitely submit your blog to some of the blog communities, where regular viewers will constantly be trawling about looking for something new to read. You can also offer to write guest articles for other popular blogs, just to get your name out there.

How to make your blog popular… I think one sure fire way is that you should definitely have a set-up so that people can leave comments and then make sure you respond to them, quickly…not 6 months later. People want to feel engaged with blog writers; they want to connect with them and be able to view them as an acquaintance. If they can’t do that, then you’re just another weirdo spouting their thoughts online. So let them talk to you and then take the time to talk back.
