I have had the same dog from childhood, and my family and I love him. But sometimes I just want him to shut up. He has bugged us with his whining and moaning constantly. How do I stop my dog from whining so much?

Dogs are great companions to have at home, but they are very much like children. You want to discipline them in the same way.

Think of how your mother has disciplined you. She may have taken away your food, locked you in a closet or stopped you from going outside. Even though dogs are not as wise as humans, they still understand the difference between right and wrong. They know that whining for hours in the middle of the night is the wrong thing to do. Likewise, they know that being locked in a closet is due to bad behavior.

You have the right to discipline a whiney dog. After all, it is your house, so don’t feel bad for punishing your dog when he doesn’t behave.

I had the same problem. For me, I just make my dog listen to hours and hours of his own recorded whining. If I have to listen to constant whining, there is no reason why my dog should not have to as well. That way, you are both even. And the dog gets to know how irritating the sounds truly are.

It might appear preposterous, but it worked, at least for me. Eventually, after a few minutes of whining, my dog could not stand it anymore and wanted to stop hearing it. I’m sure that your dog will soon realize that it is better not to whine so much as well.

I’m sure you know that dogs whine for different reasons. They whine to greet people, they whine to complain, to get food, to get attention, etc.

But if you hear your dog whining every chance she gets, give firm commands to tell her to stop. Every pet owner has to discipline the pet somehow because some behaviors are intolerable.

For instance, your dog has separation anxiety if she complains every time you leave the house. It is good that she shows her concern for you, but it is also bad because she is too attached.

What you can do is slap your hand loudly or tap your foot hard in response to her noises. You can give affirmative commands like “stop it” or “no.” You do not want to act so loudly that you scare her, though. She will notice that you are mad and think twice about whining.
