I have the cutest 3 yr. old Maltese. She’s very well-behaved, but she likes to scratch the carpet all the time. I’ve tried disciplining her not to do this without any success, and she’s not the type of dog that likes to dig outside. So why does my dog scratch on the carpet?

Your dog might be scratching the carpet to get out pent-up energy. If your dog has too much energy and no way to get rid of it, then it might turn to more strange and destructive ways to tire itself out. Although scratching the carpet might be how your dog has chosen to preoccupy itself, you can curb this behavior by tiring them out in other ways like playing with them, going for more or longer walks, providing them with more toys, etc.

There’s another possible reason why your dog scratches the carpet, it’s because of an obsessive compulsive condition derived from its lifestyle. If your dog has been confined too much, poorly socialized, or exposed to stressful environments they can adopt inappropriate behaviors like scratching, chewing, pacing, and licking. Professional trainers can help curb and stop this behavior.

Dogs scratching the carpet can signify a decline in health. If this is a new behavior, your dog might have a physical illness or condition that should be evaluated by a veterinarian. For instance, a brain tumor could be compelling your dog to engage in abnormal behavior. If you are concerned over the frequency or timing of your dog’s carpet scratching, seeking medical attention is advised.

Your dog is responding to an outside stimuli causing fear or anxiety. So, your dog might be scratching the carpet because of stress. If your dog tends to scratch the carpet more during a thunder storm or when strangers come over, this could be out of fear and an attempt to escape the situation. If your dog only scratches the carpet when you leave the house, this is likely a response to separation anxiety. Either working with a professional dog trainer or making the dog more comfortable at home, like leaving the television on when you leave, can help to stop this behavior.

Well, why does my dog scratch the carpet… If your dog is scratching the carpet or floor before lying down, this is because of natural canine instincts. In the wild, dogs would scratch an area in order to make a nest that was comfortable and secure in order to rest. Another reason is to mark their territory, because special glands in the pads of their feet release scent as they dig. For a dog, scratching the floor is encoded in their DNA as an acceptable routine.
