My daughter bought an iPhone 5s to me. I didn't use any Apple products before and this device is quite unfamiliar to me. Recently I found that there is an icon that looks like the crescent moon found next to every contact name on my mobile phone. What does it stand for? Do I need to do something?

It means you have selected the "don't disturb" icon and have muted your conversation with that contact. This is done when you tap the button for details located top of your phone screen right hand side when you open the message thread.

So long as the "don't disturb" icons stay on that particular message thread, no new messages can possibly make it into your Smartphone beep. The blue dot simply shows you a new message has been delivered. The blue dot that has a crescent moon shows a new message has entered on a "don't disturb" thread. I hope this helps a bit. But if you effected no change on your message settings, then it is a weird occurrence.

Why is there a moon next to my messages? If you have muted this contact, then there will be a moon icon. The moon icon means that you don't want to receive notification from that contact. You may occasionally change the settings without awareness. To turn off the moon face, choose a conversation, click on details located at the upper right side, and turn off the "don't disturb" icon.
