I have class every day with this guy that I’ve known for a few years, but we had never really talked much before. We sit near each other and talk every day, often flirting and joking a lot. This has been going on for a month now, and he always smiles when he sees me and asks why I was absent when I’ve had to miss class. I really like him and think that he likes me, but why won’t he ask me out? Should I make the first move?

He’s intimidated by you. Because you like him, you might think that you are being warm and friendly, but maybe you are sending him signs that you’re nervous or not interested. Even if you both have been flirting, he might think that’s your personality if he sees you flirt with a lot of guys. He might not have asked you out yet because he thinks you’re not interested in him as more than a friend.

I guess he’s really shy. Making the first move might be a daunting task for him if he’s shy, or maybe he hasn’t had a lot of luck in the past when he has tried to ask girls out. This might be the case if you notice him being the listener more than the talker during conversation or if he’s generally quiet in class. He might not be asking you out because he is uncomfortable or unsure how to approach you about it, so making the first move or hinting that you’re extremely interested in being more than friends could give him the nudge he needs.

So, "why won’t he ask me out?" I think it could be he appreciates your friendship and he’s afraid of ruining the good thing that you already have with one another, and he might value your friendship too much to worth risking it if a relationship doesn’t work out. He doesn’t want to lose you as a friend by pursuing a relationship or create unnecessary tension.

He might not be asking you out though because he’s already talking to or dating someone else. Just because he doesn’t talk about a girlfriend or isn’t dating someone in your school, workplace, etc., doesn’t mean that he’s single. Asking him if he’s seeing anyone could help you find out for sure if he’s single or taken as well as send him a sign that you’re interested.
