There are four key factors that makes the Renaissance started in Italy:

  1. Key location. Geography is the main reason the Renaissance started in Italy. The Italian states, located at the Mediterranean Sea, were centers for commerce and trade, and was the first port of call for both new ideas and goods.
  2. Scholar's refuge. Secondly, the former Roman Empire had Italy as its center, and, when the Byzantine Empire collapsed in 1453, the intellectuals of Constantinople made it their refuge. These intellectuals came with lots of the great works of the ancient Romans and Greeks, works that the west stole during the Dark Ages. Before this time, the works of the ancients were examined by scholars in Italy, but there were mostly incomplete and of a very poor quality.
  3. Leadership vacuum. Thirdly, political reasons. Following a number of political scheming, the religious Roman territory had lost power essentially in northern part of Italy, the state that Papal States were under the government of different prominent families in all the regions, and the South was dominated by the city of Naples. This leadership vacuum allowed merchant families to have reasonable power in each of the cities within the state and made revision on all the laws that govern commerce, banking, trade, and shipping. The freer atmosphere resulted in a busy exchange of both ideas and goods.
  4. The church's influence. The renaissance marked a regeneration of the ancient Roman and Greek styles and thinking, and both the Greek and Roman civilizations had Mediterranean traditions, just like Italy. The concentration of power, wealth and intellect were the main reasons why the renaissance began in Italy. Then, the church was in charge of most of the economic, political, and intellectual life of Europeans, that it assembled a majority of the wealthiest men, best minds, and most of the powerful European leaders to itself in the Roman Empire at one time. Over the centuries, the dignified merchants of most of the Italian cities had gathered so much riches over the last centuries that they were able to patronize and afford the arts and sciences more than any other person.

Why would the Renaissance have started in Italy? I would say this is because of something of an error – the Renaissance began as education, art, record keeping, trade and invention started influencing life. We often think about it starting in Italy because both Vatican and Rome provided artisans and thinkers a ready focus of support as well as commercial hubs such as Venice. International trade throughout Venice, for instance the spice trade, made the city a focal point for both the Middle East and Europe.

Several claims exist that most of the important records were preserved by monks in places such as Ireland and aided the resurrection of civilization during the rebirth so a lot of the picture is left blank when one says it began in Italy.
