Not very long ago I took a trip to New York City. While I was there I saw multiple Muslim women that were wearing a hijab so I start wondering why Muslim women were still required to wear a hijab, even when they aren’t in their home country. Is the hijab just some sort of fashion statement or does it mean something else entirely?

I had often wondered why Muslim women wear hijab. No matter what country they are in, they always have the hijab on. Recently I was in a meeting where there was a Muslim woman who had her hijab on. No one in the room seemed to care but I was curious. I quickly made friends with the woman and than asked her if she would be offended if I asked her some questions about her culture. The first question that I asked was about her hijab. While she didn’t go into great detail, she did tell me that in the Muslim culture, it is considered a sin for a woman to have her hair showing. She also said that it didn’t matter what part of the world they traveled to, they were always expected to cover their hair whenever they were in the public eye.

The central question for many Americans is why do Muslim women wear hijab. The question is not easily answered and there seem to be multiple reasons, but the main one seems to always come up. The woman covers their head because it is a sign of purity and centeredness. If a woman is caught without her hijab, she is considered a sinner and can actually be put to death for such a defiant act.

Muslim women wear hijab for religions reasons. There really doesn’t have to be any other explanation than that. It is part of their culture from the time they are born and Muslim women know that going against this religious statement can get them into trouble. The only time a Muslim woman can take her hijab off is when she is at home where no one else but her family can see her.
