When I wake up in the morning, I have these huge bags under my eyes. They last all day! Why does that happen?

Eye bag is a common issue. All people need to face it at some time in their life. Several factors can enlarge the eye bag:

  1. Sleep. The most prominent cause of eye bags is lack of sleep. The skin under your eyes is pretty thin, so if you don’t get enough sleep, the blood vessels become more prominent and show through.
  2. Eating Habits. This is a problem for a lot of people. You need lots of vitamins and minerals to keep your skin healthy. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help prevent under-eye circles.
  3. Natural Aging. The natural process of aging will cause circles under the eyes. This is because the pads under the eyes begin to shrink, and the blood vessels underneath become more visible.
  4. Cosmetics. Using the wrong kinds of makeup can cause or worsen under-eye circles. Talk to a dermatologist to learn about your skin type and find the right type of makeup for your skin. Also, wearing makeup for too long can irritate your skin, so make sure to wash of your makeup before you go to bed.
  5. Sun Exposure. Getting too much sun is bad for your skin. Under-eye circles and other skin problems can be caused by too much time in the sun.
  6. Allergies. Sinus allergies and hay fever can increase the inflammation under your eyes. Nasal congestion is a common reason behind dark, puffy under eye rings.
  7. Smoking, Alcohol, and Excessive Salt Intake. Smoking cigarettes and consuming too much salt or alcohol can cause your blood vessels to retain fluids.
  8. Genetics. Under-eye circles might just run in the family. If this is the case for you, natural remedies might not help.

There are a few home remedies that can brighten the circles under your eyes:

Cold therapy

  • Put some wet tea bags in the refrigerator overnight, or in the freezer for just a few minutes. To increase the benefits, do this with green or chamomile tea, as their natural medicinal properties are great for your skin.
  • Apply the tea bags for a few minutes first thing in the morning. It will help get your circulation going and help reduce swelling because of water retention.
  • You can also try using cucumber slices. They contain copper, which is a component of collagen.

Your lifestyle

  • Drink at least a liter and a half of water every day.
  • Get at least seven hours of sleep every night.
  • Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Practice portion control with salt, coffee, and alcohol.
  • Sleeping on your side or belly can increase fluid accretion. It’s best to sleep on your back and keep your head elevated.
  • Take antihistamines if you have seasonal allergies.
  • Clean and hydrate your skin, and use sunscreen.

Why do we get bags under your eyes? I think you mean, why do you get bags under your eyes? The most likely cause for under-eye circles is lack of sleep, but genetics could also be a factor. You could try getting more sleep, or using make up to cover the circles.

Sometimes I have bags under my eyes. I like to put two spoons in the freezer before bed and then apply them in the morning and the bags shrink. I hope that helps.
