I have a big job interview coming up that I’m really nervous about. This is my dream job, so I want to do really well and get the position. One of the most common interview questions seems to be why you think you would be a good fit for this position, but I’m afraid of either not being confident enough or too confident. What kinds of reasons do employers want to hear for why you deserve the job?

It’s important to focus on the top three or four reasons rather than a long list when you are asked: why do you think you would be a good fit for the job. Providing a few strong points with descriptions and examples from the past gives someone interviewing you a better idea of why you’re a good fit than a bunch of vague answers. Going into detail about the context of your answers always makes you look more honest and experienced.

Noted accomplishments and success stories from past jobs are good reasons that show why you deserve the job. This tells the interviewer that you will be capable of handling what’s asked of you in this job as well as the fact that you get positive results. One of the main things a potential employer is looking for is what you can contribute to their company.

Explaining the unique skills and insights you bring to the job is a good way to approach why you deserve the position. There are a lot of people that might have the same skills you have, but what is it that you can do differently? Consider the variety of things that you’re good at and the resources you have that can benefit one another. For instance, your organization skills could improve how fast you accomplish multitasking.

Why do you think you would be a good fit for this position? To answer this question, even if you may not have the strongest skill set, describing your passion for the job and willingness to learn can persuade an employer that you would be a good fit for this position. If this is your dream job, then tell them and go above and beyond the basic expectations for the position. Just because someone is more qualified doesn’t mean they’ll put in the work ethic that you will, and this is a winning quality.
