So they call it ‘shooting a beaver’ when a female sets her legs apart and you can see her privates. I know they also call a woman’s genitals a pussy. I don’t get it. Why do people call a vagina a beaver? It’s not like they grind up wood with their teeth. And they don’t even look like cats. Will someone please explain this to me?

You’re right. There are a variety of slang names for vaginas that don’t seem to make sense. They are often referred to as beavers, pussies, twats, cookies, and other unlikely names. It does make you wonder.

There actually is a fairly reasonable explanation for labeling a woman’s lady parts as a beaver. Back around the 17th century people came to believe that sexually transmitted diseases and crabs were passed through contact with pubic hair so prostitutes were ordered to shave off their pelvic curls. That’s when bordellos earned the moniker baldy houses. The hookers’ customers, however, found the bare look unnatural and unattractive and the women were losing business. Their solution? To have little wigs known as merhkins made for their crotch. The material of choice for these hairpieces was beaver pelts, selected because of the natural feel of the beaver’s hair. Since that day vaginas have often been referred to as beavers.

A vagina is called a beaver because when it’s bare it looks like the gap between a beaver’s two big front teeth. That’s the same reason another name for it is a camel toe. Gosh, come to think of that’s probably why those anatomically correct parts are also referred to as a tuna taco or a bearded clam. Hmm, sounds kind of fishy to me.

Why is a vagina called a beaver? To answer your question, I have to say that there’re a variety of tales about the origin for nicknaming a vagina a beaver. Some think it’s because pubic hair and beaver hair feel alike and a beaver pelt has a lush crop on it. Others tell me that if often refers to the smell because a beaver that is caged or trapped puts off a strong musky odor. Oddly enough there is no clear understanding about how it became to be known as a pussy, either. I think it probably has to do with the soft hair and the sometimes fishy scent of a cat’s breath.
